bulletIn 1559, the first Index of Prohibited Books published earlier in the year by the Vatican was found so severe that Pope Paul IV issued a "mitigation" to lessen the Index's impact. No one bothered to publish the mitigation until 1909.

bulletAdam Mansbach's "Children's Book for Adults" Go the F**k to Sleep was published on this day in 2011. Originally intended to be released in October of that year, PDF copies were distributed via email, creating an unintended viral marketing campaign that propelled the book's Amazon ranking to No. 1 by May 12, prompting the publisher to move the publication date up to this day and increase the first printing to 150,000 copies. Its flash fame sparked controversy about the use of profanity in a "children's" book, and celebrity readings by actors Jennifer Garner, LeVar Burton, Kevin Pollak, and Samuel L. Jackson were also virally popular.
